BUILDING A LIFE
IN RECOVERY
Getting sober can save your life. Recovery is what helps you build one you actually want to live.
BUILDING A NEW NORMAL
Recovery can feel strange before it starts feeling like home.
Old routines disappear. Certain people, places and habits might not fit anymore. The time you used to spend drinking or using suddenly has to be filled with something else.
That can feel boring, uncomfortable or even lonely at first. It doesn't necessarily mean you're doing recovery wrong. Sometimes it means you're creating a life your nervous system hasn't learned yet.
RELATIONSHIPS & CONNECTION
Addiction often grows in isolation. Recovery grows through connection.
Connection doesn't have to mean having a huge support system. It can mean one safe person, a meeting, a friend, a counsellor, a family member, an online recovery community or simply learning how to stop disappearing when life gets difficult.
Recovery gives us an opportunity to practice being honest, present and connected instead of constantly hiding.
PURPOSE OVER PAST
Your past can explain part of your story without deciding how the rest of it ends.
Recovery creates room for things that addiction may have pushed aside: goals, creativity, relationships, responsibility, curiosity, service, work, parenting, hobbies, health or simply becoming someone you respect.
Purpose doesn't have to be some massive life mission. Sometimes purpose is having a reason to get out of bed tomorrow that isn't tied to using.
KEEP GROWING
Recovery isn't about becoming perfect.
You'll still have difficult days. You'll still get angry, tired, stressed, lonely or overwhelmed. You'll make mistakes. You might fall back into old thinking.
Growth is what happens when you notice it sooner, respond differently and keep moving instead of throwing everything away because one day didn't go perfectly.
